In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light"; and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good.” Gen. 1:1-4a (NKJV)
Several years have come and gone with generations innumerable in the history of mankind. History is littered with great and outstanding knowledge, developments and advancements in several fields of human endeavour. The computer and information technology, science, medicine and other revealing fields of human disciplines seem to make the present age to believe as if there was never a beginning at all. Man’s spirituality and relationship with his creator, God has grown greatly and complicated that, even the person of God has been so misunderstood, misrepresented and misdirected with all kinds of religious beliefs ranging from animism, cults and occults to biblical Christianity.
At a glance, we are tempted to believe that, there was never a genesis to give credence or empowerment to the metamorphosis and the evolution of all that we have today in all facets of life’s endeavours. No matter where we are today, we must equally know that there was and there will always be a beginning to everything. Even God had a beginning according to our text for creation. (Gen. 1:1) Because there was a beginning that is the reason why we have time today! Today is a pointer, that, there was a yesterday and there is a today. If there is no today there can never be a tomorrow. So creating a new glorious future requires a creation of a new beginning just as God did.
One of the mysteries and puzzles of life is the mystery of time! Time was created by God in the midst of an ocean called eternity for mankind to give us the ability to choose, make decisions and start all over with new ideas or options when we fail or make mistakes. That is why we have seconds, minutes, hours, day and night, months and years to enable us have second chances in case we don’t do things the right way!
“Enoch lived 65 years, and begot Methuselah. After he begot Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years, and had sons and daughters. So all the days of Enoch were 365 years. And Enoch walked with God; and he was not, for God took him.” Gen. 5:21-24 (NKJV)
Enoch shows this example by not walking with God until he was 65 years. He now decided to walk with God later for 300 years. He had two time frames in his life time, evidenced by his decision with God at a new beginning! The first beginning he refused to walk with God. What a great lesson every one of us must learn and apply as the year 2011 turns into 2012!
To do this, there are a number of things we must do as revealed by our text. (Gen. 1:1-4a) These include the following:
First, we must start with God the Son!
“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it.” Jn. 1:1-5 (NKJV)                              
Before the heaven and the earth were created, God came first! “In the beginning God created…” where there is no God there is no creation. So we must start with Him, if we must have a true new beginning. Jn. 1:1-5 reveals that, God created the heaven and the world with His Word (i.e. Jesus Christ). If God could not do without Jesus Christ as a co-partner in creation, then we can never create a glorious future without the person of Jesus Christ. Do you have an intimate relationship with Christ Jesus? Beginning the year with Christ will secure you a glorious future.
